If there was one product category in the world of custom installation that can sell itself, it would be video and home theater.

While it’s true that a great home theater is equal parts audio and video, it’s also true that a well set up video demonstration is easier for non-enthusiasts to relate to and emotionally invest in.

This trend started back in the early 2000s when the conversion went from standard definition (SD) to high-definition (HD) was first taking place.

Supporting this transition was the rapid development of solid-state technologies such as Texas Instruments’ Digital Light Processing (DLP) and LCD chip variants such as LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon), which overtook CRT (cathode ray tube) technologies to help drive the video market’s soaring popularity.

The convergence of these technologies, along with the refinement of bulb technologies, enabled manufacturers to produce higher quality, brighter images at prices a wider range of people could afford.

By the end of the decade, HD images had matured and manufacturers were combining their 1080p projectors and TVs with anamorphic options that eliminated the black bars people would see when watching CinemaScope movies (2.39:1).

Moreover, the 2010s ushered in the dawn of solid-state light engines in the world of projection through the introduced of LED and laser technologies.

Unfortunately, right around the same period—the early 2010s—the video industry experienced the reintroduction of 3D technologies with the highpoint of that fad being the cinematic success of the James Cameron film “Avatar.”

CEDIA Expo 2019 Showcases 4K, 8K Technologies

Today, the home video market is in the midst of another transition: HD to UltraHD 4K video.

Numerous industry studies predict that 4K display products are rapidly becoming the hardware of choice for consumers and many of these products will be shown on the CEDIA Expo show floor.

Augmenting the picture capabilities of these 4K products are high dynamic range (HDR) technologies.

Leading HDR formats include Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) and HDR10, and as the 4K resolution continues to gain mainstream momentum the more basic HDR technologies such as HDR10 are quickly becoming standard amenities with 4K products.

The market is also starting to show 8K products and these products will also be represented at CEDIA Expo 2019.
